gabrielle giffords returned to capitol hill today with her emotional plea to end gun violence. hundreds of motorcycles stopped traffic today so a biker can pop the question right in the middle of a highway. but we begin with a weather alert. a wicked line of storms with a dangerous history is moving into our area. good afternoon i'm pat lawsing muse. >> and i'm jim handly. the storms have already proved deadly and destructiv take a look at this video of massive damage. >> this is part of a storm system that spawned nearly 500 severe weather reports over the past 24 hours, including 14 possible tornadoes. right now, the same sim is headed our way. storm team 4 has been tracking it for days, our team coverage begins with meteorologist veronica johnson. what's the time line? >> the next six to seven more hours. we have quite a ways to go. you can see on radar, there's

the storms down south, part of the same weather system headed even. we're on the leading edge of some of those heavy rains and the high winds too. you can see around columbia, gaithersburg, through montgomery county, even leesburg, blue mount areas. and even some gusty conditions, too. headed towards gaithersburg, in the next 20 minutes, so all against eastbound for us, from in and out until 11:00 p.m. we have the possibility of seeing not only heavy rain, but also very high winds throughout the area. those heavy rains could be delivers ponding on area roads. we could get quite a bit of rain in a short period of time. let's go to chief meteorologist doug kammerer standing by with more on our potential for flooding and wind damage. >> yeah, veronica, the national weather service just issued the wind advisories for the entire area. earlier today it was out towards portions of the blue ridge, but

today it's for the entire area with winds gusting upwards of 50 miles an hour. these are non-thunderstorm wind gusts. with winds gusting to 50 miles an hour, you know we could see higher gusts if any of those storms begin to develop. also out there we have the flood watch in effect, but take a look at the wind gusts, upyards of 35 miles an hour p and over towards washington, a wind -- these winds will continue to increase as we move through the evening. there's the flash flood whauch in effect. it is for the d.c. metro area, in portions of the mountains we could see upwards of an inch to an inch and a half. very, very quickly, and that's why we're talking about that potential for flooding overnight. if you're out and about tonight, you watch out for the high water if you're around town. temperatures tonight 67 degrees, 65 by 8:00, taking you hour by hour, between 9:00 and 10:00, that's when we expect the heaviest of these storms to move on through, heavy rain and tron winds, once again the winds

could be gusting between 50 and 60 miles an hour. we're going to talk much more about this threat as we continue throughout the rest of the evening. storm team 4 will keep you ahead of the storm. doug, thank you, an emergenciry meeting in anne arundel county in an effort to permanently oust of county executive. john leopold convicted yesterday of misconduct for using county employees to run political and personal errands. he was suspended from office after that conviction. this meeting is introducing a bill calling for his removal. the council will then hold a public meeting and vote on monday. the judge is expected to anow the sentencing date tomorrow. the shake-up at the trial of a former culpepper police officer waiting to be sentenced today. the defense has requested a mistrial after reports of juror misconduct. jurors testified today they had access to two dictionaries and this thesaurus and used them during deliberation. daniel harmon wright was

convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of patricia cook. david culver will explain at 5:00 the allegations. her former colleagues greeted her like a rock start today. retired arizona congresswoman gabby giffords was a surprise witness at the senate hearing, but the senators were quickly reminded that she is just one of a long line of victims of gun violence. danielle lee has our report. >> reporter: senators had a fresh reminder about the consequences, a chicago honors student and performer last week was killed yesterday at a park. >> a gunman came in and shot her dead. just a matter of days after the happiest day of her life she's gone. >> reporter: as the fight rages on capitol hill, another shooting at an office in phoenix left several wounded. gabriel giffords, critically wounded by a gunman, pleaded for

right now a 6 years old is being held hostage in southeast alabama. authorities say the man went onto the school bus filled with kids. they say he shot and killed the driver, then took the boy into an underground bunker.

sources tell nbc news tonight the suspect is a 65-year-old man, who had been due in course to face menacing charges today. there's still no word on a possible motive. there will be no new trial for former penn state assistant coach jergerry sandusky. today a judge rejected a request by his lawyers who claimed they didn't have enough time to prep for the trial. the judge says a post trial review found no material that would have changed their strategy. a jury convicted san dulles kiss of assaulting ten -- an appeal will go to the mid level superior court in the next month. taking a live look outside at this hour, as we continue to monitor stormy weather. it's been a week of huge teerature swings. dr. jackie is here to tell us how this weather could make you sick. veronica is tracking those strong storms. her full

with. i'm keith russell, this just in. a s.w.a.t. team surrounding a home in arizona, believed to be connected to a workplace shooting earlier today. these are live pictures as we see them right now.

from what we understand, the shooter still has not been found, but there's a lot of activity as we speak. now, here is how this store developed. police surrounded the home in phoenix this afternoon, around seven miles north of the shooting scene. officers say they are talking to someone. that's the latest development, but they stress that person is not a suspect. around 10:30 this morning, a gunman opened fire at a phoenix office building. witnesses say he got into an argue before opening fire. three people were wounded, one of them critical. police say the shooter is still on the loose. as we speak, they are looking for that shooter right now. on to our next story. we have learned that spirit will offer new flights from our area to vegas. they said today they will launch in start i lame april from bwi to vegas. there will soon be cheaper flights going that way, that gamble has paid off.

full of runny nose, and they're always wiping their nose. >> how do you treat it? >> ask your doctor for a prescription medicine caught atropine nasal sprays. all the other suprais for allergies will not work for this. we're going from warm back to cold. a lot of people might be coughing from this. why is that? >> those are people that are amongst us that have reactive airway disease. it makes them bronc ospasm or cough. we use cold as some way to diagnose asthma. we blow cold air, and if they cough, we know they have asthma. if you were coughing with the last cold spell, you may get on your maintenance medicine. here comes the cold again. a lot of people feel headaches oddly enough with the change in the pressure system. why is that? >> it's because your sinuses, which are the air pockets in your head, and they are just

like mini globes, they will respond to the air complain the same way the air system out here is, so if there's storms out here, there's storms in your sinuses. it will cause migraines. here's something, if you know you have this, with a change, premedicate right now, but veronica is telling us the pressure is changing. get to the business of helping yourself out. >> we know it's been a bad flu season, but the nor ovirus is out there, and you say this thrives in cold weather. >> e.r.s are packed where this. there's the tummy bug. they were packed with this. all you need to do is ask the secretary of state, and she'll tell you how bad dehydration can be, so be sure to push fluids all the way. >> it doesn't take long before you're dehydrated, and you don't even know it. >> if you want to use the b.r.a.t. bananas rite,

>> the latest means we'll get one of the things at least is a whole lot of rain, and a lot of rain in a short period of time, because of that the area, parts of our area under a flood watch through tonight, so for prince george's county, for anne arundel county, fairfax, montgomery, loudoun, up to the north, areas right along and west of i-81, again, a lieutenant of rain in a short period of time, we could be looking at rain rates of over a half inch per hour. let's talk about what is going on right now on storm team 4 radar. everywhere you see the shading of yellow and orange is where there's currently moderate rains coming down. sliding over some of the same air. bl bluemont, leesburg, up to howard county, that's where most of our heavy rain is right now. look at what's off to the west. more heavy rain, not too far from that pocket in southwest

virginia, there is a severe thunderstorm watch that's gone up, just south of stanton. all right they're looking at this cluster of thunderstorms. all part of that same system that delivered that violent weather, down article adaresville. so that's where the bulk of the severe weather has been down to the south, just on the fringes. look at our wind speeds. they're sustained, 20-mile-per-hour sustained winds speeds with gusts up to 33. manassas close to 30, and gaithersburg right now, up to 38-mile-an-hour wind gusts in frederick, maryland. we are under a wind advisory, and that takes us into 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. we'll continue to see this is high winds, and maybe deliver a few isolated power outages. of course, temperature is a big story.

now your temperature. 73, but already cool down with the storms to the north. look at leesburg, 57 degrees in gaithersburg. cooling? you bet. that's really the store for tomorrow. 7:00, 8:00, 9:00 p.m., will go from 67 to 73 by 9:00 p.m., could see isolated thunder, 62 by 10:00 p.m. the main threat with this system, of course, is the heavy rain that i think we'll see push in here later. around 10:00, around 11:00 p.m., around midnight is your heaviest rains that will be coming through right out ahead of the weather system. falling temperatures, calling it windy, cool, cool for thursday, then say hello to old man winter for friday. we have the return the not only cold air, but flurries throughout. so we go from 52 with falling temperatures tomorrow, your high on friday 37, the weekend not bad, 38 to 43, about you this

as a result of the images that we see daily on television? >> absolutely. this is one of those things that black women say they have to fight, no matter what their degree is. and black women, 64 cents to that dollar. we had a chance to air an interview we did on our program with another realie tv star, who is the sister of keyshia cole, she actually got a spin-off show as a result of her bad behavior. she walked away from the show, and reflected on her behavior. she said i didn't like what i was sign on television. she and her five children suffered as a result of her walking away financially, they

too they have gotten just over a quarter of an inch of rain. they are loaded up. so let's head to the weather wall. 0.54 of an inch of rain heart virginia. that whole pocket to the north and west is where most of the rain has been today. right up here, so as we phase into our radar right now, we have this one area that we've been watching around loudoun county, montgomery and hout court. that's where most of the moderate rain has sitting, sleighting on through, in areas of northern fauquier, not making much progress down to the south and east, but kind of sliding more in an easterly fashion. the whole front will be sliding east. i'm watching this cluster of storms, down around roanoke, just south, that will be coming

up into our area later. again like lie we'll be under a severe thunderstorm watch. they certainly are down to the south. flooding again a possibility throughout our area, as we could see rainfall rates of half an inch to an inch per hour. at times when this front gets right on top of us, 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, the rain will really be coming down winds, too, look at this, they're already gusting up to 33 miles an hour in manassas. we'll have high winds throughout the day tomorrow, but the strongest winds will come also when that front is right on top of us. we could see gusts to 50, maybe even 60 miles an hour wind currently out of the south, so it's bringing up that humidity, the high humidity, the moisture from the gulf of mexico, as well as the mild temperatures. we saw them today, a lot of

a california man is in hot water with police after shutting down a local highway to propose to his girlfriend. nbc's angie crouch has move on the incident.

>> reporter: this is it is heart of a criminal investigation launched by the california highway patrol. more than 300 bikers shut down the eastbound ape in west covina so a man would propose to her girlfriend. it was pink smoke, and friends popping wheel aye nearby. katie lacey said the commotion was so loud, she had to stop taking orders. >> it was very loud, it was very -- there was a lot of smoke in the air. >> reporter: chp is trying to identify the bikers, saying what they did, and charges could range from misdemeanors to felonies. >> it's a public safety issue as well. aside from reckless driving. stopping when it's a nonemergency, just a few violationses that this were committing at the time. >> the chp said the freeway was
